What is the Basic Open Water Course?

The SSI's Basic Open Water Course is the beginning course that teaches you the basic but essential skills to enjoy diving safely. Under the guidance of a professional SSI Instructor, you'll develop the knowledge and skill necessary to enjoy a lifetime of underwater exploration.

Can I learn to dive?

Anyone in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can learn to dive. These are the prerequisites:

  • Minimum Age: 10
  • Ability to swim 200 metres in any style
  • Comfortable in water
  • Medically Fit

What will I learn from the course?

Upon successful completion of the course you will earn an SSI Basic Open Water Diver Certification and be allowed to dive in over 200 countries.

How long does it take?

The course is a 3-day program, the breakdown is as follows:

  • Day 1 - Classroom
  • Day 2 - Confined Water Session / Open Water Session
  • Day 3 - Confined Water Session / Open Water Session

A new course will commence every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Upon successful completion, you will earn your Basic Open Water Certification.

What is included in the price?

SSI OWD Course fees included

  • 3 days theory & in-water training in KK / TAR marine park
  • Full OWD pack including log book, C-Card, original SSI VCD for you to keep
  • Use of full set dive equipment & air tanks during course & return boat transfer.

What's not included in the price?

  • TAR marine park dive fee RM50.00 per non-Malaysian & RM20.00 per Malaysian per course
  • Insurance fee RM10.00 per person
  • Jetty fee of RM12.00 per person per course

Where will it be conducted?

The academic lessons are conducted in our own training facilities in the centre of KK. Lessons start every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. If however should you require other days, Sabah Divers will be glad to accommodate to your busy schedule (conditions apply). The Open Water sessions are conducted in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The park is 5 km from the ferry terminal, a few hundred metres from our office.
