Lankayan is 1½ hours boat ride from Sandakan. Since being declared a Marine Conservation Area in 2000 the reefs around Lankayan have flourished and marine life in the area is thriving. A combination of beautiful reef mounts smothered with fishlife and its two wrecks make diving in Lankayan a real pleasure. Expect to see all the usual reef suspects plus leopard sharks, and the freakish giant jawfish!
Lankayan wreck – fishing vessel captured while poaching in the conservation area, purposedly sunk at 23m to the south east of the island.
The Mosquito Fleet – An armed barge belong to the Japanese force World War II.
Lankayan is remote, with only one resort and has no local residents making it a perfect island getaway. One of Sabah's most beautiful islands it also affords the opportunity to see nesting green turtles during breeding months.
